Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala and Tan Chee Meng to join Temasek Board

Singapore, Wednesday 10 November 2021 – Temasek Holdings is pleased to announce further new appointments to its Board of Directors.

Mr Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala and Mr Tan Chee Meng SC will join Temasek’s Board on 1 January 2022. This follows the appointments of Mr Ajay Banga from 1 October 2021 and Ms Jenny Lee from 1 January 2022, which were announced by the company on 30 September 2021.

The appointments continue a planned process of transition and renewal of the Board, following a number of retirements over the last two years.

Mr Zobel de Ayala is the Chairman of Ayala Corporation, one of the largest business conglomerates in the Philippines. He served as Chairman and CEO of the Group from April 2006 to April 2021. He is a distinguished member of various business and civic organisations in the Philippines and beyond, including the JP Morgan International Council, the JP Morgan Asia Pacific Council, the Mitsubishi Corporation International Advisory Council, LeapFrog Investments’ Global Leadership Council and the board of the Singapore Management University. He was the first Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Pioneer from South East Asia; one of 10 individuals recognised in 2017 by the United Nations Global Compact for the pursuit of the 17 SDGs in business.

Mr Tan Chee Meng SC is the Deputy Chairman of WongPartnership LLP, one of Singapore’s largest law firms, and a Director of Ausnet Services Limited. His specialties include general civil litigation, construction and engineering dispute resolution, criminal law, insurance and professional indemnity. He was the first Specialist Judge appointed in Singapore in 2006 for a period of two years under a scheme where senior lawyers were invited to lend their expertise to the Subordinate Courts. He moved to legal practice after starting his career as an engineering graduate. After being awarded a Singapore Government Legal Scholarship, he read law at National University of Singapore and University of Cambridge, UK, before joining the Commercial Affairs Department.

Announcing the appointments today, Temasek Chairman, Mr Lim Boon Heng, said the Board would benefit from the skills and experience of its new members.

“Jaime and Chee Meng are pre-eminent leaders in their fields and professions. However, beyond their professional areas, they are both deeply committed to their communities, which is important to Temasek given our wider stewardship role. Together with Jenny, who joins the Board on the same day, we look forward to the contribution each of these leaders will make to the future development of our firm,” Mr Lim said.

About Mr Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala

Mr Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala is the Chairman of Ayala Corporation, one of the largest business groups in the Philippines with interests in real estate, banking, telecommunications, energy and infrastructure, industrial and technologies, healthcare, and education. He served as Chairman and CEO of the Group from April 2006 to April 2021.

Outside the Ayala group, he is a member of various business and socio- civic organisations in the Philippines and abroad, including the JP Morgan International Council, the JP Morgan Asia Pacific Council, the Mitsubishi Corporation International Advisory Council and LeapFrog Investments’ Global Leadership Council.

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit in 2009, the Philippine Legion of Honor with rank of Grand Commander in 2010, and the Order of Mabini with rank of Commander in 2015 by the President of the Philippines. In 2017, he was recognised as a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Pioneer for his work in sustainable business strategy and operations. The first SDG Pioneer from the Philippines, he was one of 10 individuals recognised for championing sustainability and the pursuit of the 17 SDGs in business.

Mr Zobel de Ayala received his BA in Economics (with honors) from Harvard University in 1981 and MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1987.

About Mr Tan Chee Meng SC

Mr Tan Chee Meng, Senior Counsel, is the Deputy Chairman of WongPartnership LLP. His main areas of practice are general civil litigation, construction and engineering dispute resolution, criminal law, insurance, professional indemnity and disciplinary proceedings. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2006 and was the first Specialist Judge appointed in Singapore in 2006 for a period of two years under a scheme where senior lawyers were invited to lend their expertise to the Subordinate Courts.

Prior to WongPartnership, he was Managing Partner for Harry Elias & Partners from 1993 to 2007. From 1987 to 1992, he served as Deputy Senior State Counsel in the Attorney-General’s Chambers and as Deputy Director at the Commercial Affairs Department.  Earlier, he was a Civil Engineer with the Public Works Department before moving to the Ministry of National Development as Deputy Director, Planning from 1982 to 1984.

Mr Tan is currently a Board member of Ausnet Services Ltd. He was formerly the Chairman of, and currently the Advisor to, the School Management Committee of the Assumption English School. He was previously on the boards of Urban Redevelopment Authority, JTC Corporation, Singapore Power Ltd, SPI (Australia) Assets Pty Ltd, Mapletree Commercial Trust Management Ltd, PWD Corporation Pte Ltd, and Board of Governors of St Gabriel’s Foundation.

He graduated from University of Canterbury of New Zealand with First Class Honours in Engineering under a Colombo Plan scholarship in 1979. He was subsequently awarded a Singapore Government Legal Scholarship to read law at National University of Singapore and University of Cambridge, where he was also awarded a First Class Honours for his LL.M.

Mr Tan is on the Panel of Specialist Mediators of Singapore International Mediation Centre, and an accredited Adjudicator appointed under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act (Cap 30B). He was one of the consultants for the 2006 edition of the Singapore Court Practice. He is also the author of the Defamation chapter in Atkin's Court Forms – Singapore.

He was awarded the Public Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat) this year.
