Passing of our former Chairman, Mr Lee Ek Tieng

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Lee Ek Tieng.

Mr Lee served as Temasek Holdings Chairman with distinction from 1987 to 1996. Under his stewardship, Temasek's portfolio grew substantially in size and significance, with portfolio companies such as SingTel, DBS and many others, growing from strength to strength. His foresight and leadership helped to shape Temasek’s trajectory as an active global investor in the ensuing years.

Before his time at Temasek, Mr Lee also served as Chairman of Sembawang Shipyard (1977 to 1986), one of the key players in Singapore’s shipbuilding industry.

Beyond his tenure as Chairman, he continued to be a mentor and advisor to us over the years, as Temasek transformed from a Singapore holding company to a global investment company. We benefited tremendously from his wise counsel, guidance, and insights.

A former top civil servant, Mr Lee made significant contributions to Singapore, leading crucial infrastructure projects during the early years of its independence, including the establishment of an islandwide sewerage system and the enhancement of the nation’s waterways.

Said Temasek’s Chairman, Mr Lim Boon Heng: “Mr Lee served Singapore and his fellow citizens faithfully and selflessly. He was truly an inspiration to succeeding generations, not just for his service but for his character, his humility and his graciousness.”

Mr Lee has been a great colleague, a mentor, an advisor, and a friend. His passing is a great loss to us and Singapore.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
